Hello Sebastian,
I came across your website and email address during a diamond info search yesterday. I found your site extremely informative and helpful! I am in the process of upgrading my stone and have had a lot of trouble finding one that meets my ever growing wish list.
The information out there is a bit overwhelming! I am seeking some guidance in finding a 2 carat round diamond I will love. I am looking solely on jamesallen at this point. I can give your more detail and my wish list/criteria but wanted to introduce myself first. I will await your reply. Thank you!

Thank you for your inquiry. I am happy to help. Please send me more details!

Sure, I will start with my search criteria I am using to start. Feel free to add your opinion to my parameters if you feel I should be adjusting my list.
2 carat round stone (ideally over if budget allows but at least 8mm)
Excellent cut (I'm using a depth up to 62.6% and a table up to 59% for parameters/excellent polish and symmetry as well)
GIA Certified
I color (I'm willing to go to J if someone can help me feel confident about a J stone)
Eye clean (I'm searching mostly SI1)
No fluorescence (I am stuck on this and have read both sides of the debate) budget up to 14k.
I plan to have the stone set in either white gold or platinum. I would like to have some small diamonds on the band but unsure of my preference at this point. My wedding band is a platinum diamond eternity band. I don't need to match it but obviously will wear both together.
Here are a few examples of stones I have found:
I should add, I have used the Holloway Cut Advisor on the first 3 stones. The first two were favorable, the third was not. I am also speaking with someone from diamondpro.com who works with jamesallen.
She told me the third stone was a good choice although I would like your opinion and she selected the fourth stone for me. Please let me know if I can clarify anything and I look forward to your thoughts. Thank you!

Thank you for the additional information. Out of the four diamonds, I prefer the below diamond sku 5392154. It is, however, showing as “not available” on the James Allen website. Did you place it on hold?

Sebastian,
It does show that it sold unfortunately. For my reference, could you explain why you chose that particular one? The Holloway scale showed a rating of over 5, which is why I essentially discounted it.
I’m your opinion, what specifics should I focus on as I continue my search? Thank you!

Hi, I don't reference the HCA. It is an algorithm. It is a limiting tool. I picked the diamond because of its crown and pavilion angles. These two angles are important to help maximize light reflection. Please reference the preferred proportions on my website: https://yourdiamondteacher.com/diamond-shapes-cuts/round-cut-diamond-engagment-rings/

Got it, thanks. I checked the link you sent and adjusted my search criteria. I would appreciate your opinion on a few more stones I found reflecting this:
I appreciate the feedback. Thanks!

Wow! Great job with your selections! You can confidently choose any of these diamonds and you would be happy with your final selection! If you twisted my arm to make a final choice, I would choose diamond sku 5389010. The crown and pavilion angle are perfect. It is a very white J color, meaning closer to an I color than a K color. Overall it is a very pleasing diamond.

One final thought from you if you don’t mind…I am leaning towards this stone from the group I sent to you.
I have it on hold actually. Before making this large purchase, do you have any negative feedback or concern for me? I know you said any of the 4 I sent to you would be great options…do you feel the stone looks slightly gray or hazy?
I realize a computer screen won’t depict the exact color or sparkle. I am hesitating with the J color to be honest and want to feel confident!

You don't need to be concerned. The diamond will be white. And it will have the sparkle you want a diamond to have. You can purchase this diamond with total confidence!

Purchased! Again, I very much appreciate your feedback. If I can write a review or comment on your assistance, I would be happy to do so.
Your Diamond Teacher |
Congratulations! I'd like to hear back from you once you receive the diamond to hear how much you love it! I don't have a platform, as of yet, for people to write a review, but thank you!

Sebastian,
I received my stone last week and although it was a beautiful stone and extremely sparkly, the warmth of the J color in certain lights admittedly bothered me. I noticed it especially when next to some of my other jewelry.
I have returned the stone but am still searching. I’ve adjusted my search to include H/I stones. I am disappointed but am looking at it as a great learning experience and will use it towards my next stone.
If you don’t mind, I would like to send you a couple more if I could to get your opinion. Again, I really appreciate your input to this point. I will be in touch!
Your Diamond Teacher |
I would adjust your search to include G/H stones. Going up one color, may not be enough, since many I color diamonds can be borderline J color. 🙂

Hello Sebastian,
We were in touch earlier in the summer and you helped me narrow down some diamond options. I’m searching for a 2 carat round diamond. I purchased one from James Allen and wound up returning it since I decided I really prefer a whiter stone than the “J” I purchased.
If I can get a higher color grade and still be in the “eye clean” category, I am ok going down to an SI2. I’ve adjusted my search again as well as involved a couple local jewelers to find some options for me. Below are a few I would appreciate your opinion on:
Thanks again!
Your Diamond Teacher |
It is nice to hear from you, again! If you want the diamond to be noticeably whiter than the J color you returned, then I highly suggest you consider H color and higher. Perhaps, even so far as G or higher. With that being said, I would go for the below F color diamond, however, it is listed as “not available” on the website. Did you place it on hold?
Otherwise, I would choose the below H color diamond.

Sebastian,
I’m writing to let you know I finally found my stone! The 2.01 F colored stone is perfect. It’s eye clean, extremely brilliant and fiery and I couldn’t be happier. Thank you again for all your advice over the last couple months. I appreciate it! I’m sending two pictures along as well…
Not the best quality photos but I hope you get the idea. Thank you!
Your Diamond Teacher |
Wonderful! Congratulations! Your due diligence and patience paid off!
