Diamond Query: Lab Grown Round Cuts – “I don’t want to buy “ideal proportions” and end up with shitty light performance.”

| Anonymous Reader

Hi Sebastian,

Hoping you can help me by giving your opinion about two round cut stones and the attached images/videos/reports. My girlfriend prefers a lab created diamond, so I’ve been looking at them online. I’m using an online retailer that seems reputable (has incredible online reviews).

I’m looking at two stones currently, one of which essentially meets the proportions for a perfect round cut. What do you think of them? I literally just got the ASET and Idealscope images from the retailer in the last 24 hours.

Not sure what to make of them. One is a 2.08ct and the other is a 2.24ct. Thanks so much!

Thank you for your inquiry. I am happy to help!

Based on the information provided, I would choose the one you instinctively like better, since their performance is practically the same.

You may have wanted a more technical answer, however, either one would be a great choice!

Let me know if you have additional questions. 🙂

Thanks Sebastian for such a quick response! I was hoping for a more technical answer, and if from the images you could tell if these were shitty stones or not. Both have fairly excellent proportions (which I explicitly requested from the retailer), but I know that doesnt always equate to light performance.

I sent the same attachments to another online diamond expert who told me they were “mediocre stones” and that i should “dump the jeweler” because of the angle of the ASET images and that i was likely being misled purposely.

I’m not quite as pessimistic and you seem more reasonable in your response. I’m stuck in a situation were online is really the only route for me, and this online retailer (YADAV in san francisco, CA) appears very reputable from its reviews.

Financially im already at a benefit given its a lab grown diamond, but i dont want to buy “ideal proportions” and end up with shitty light performance. Im hoping to get a higher quality video from the retailer too before deciding. Thanks again in advance!

I know this is a significant purchase emotionally and financially. And you should absolutely do your due diligence and use all your resources to make the most informed decision.

We can hyper focus on all the light performance test results provided for diamonds and gather expert opinions in order to flush out your final decision or we can keep this more simple. When you go into a jewelry store, they do not have ASET or Idealscope images to show customers.

You go off of the diamond grading report and what your eyes are telling you when you look at the actual diamond. I understand that you are not able to see the diamonds in person, therefore you are depending on other tools to guide you in your decision making process.

As you mentioned the angles/ proportions of these two diamonds are excellent. This means a team of highly trained Gemologists carefully evaluated these diamonds and determined that they fall into the Excellent category.

The diamonds will have the sparkle you want. I don’t want you to have paralysis from over analysis!! If, however, you want to keep shopping, have you considered Brilliant Earth?

They are another online retailer that has lab created diamonds. I hope this helps!
